Abstrakt: Less than 2 hours' drive along cedar-lined Yuzu Road from Kochi city, the enchanting village of Umaji is an alpine community charged with nurturing the cream of Japan's yuzu crop. Michi-no-eki (road-stations) and farmstands en route promise ambrosial sustenance such as yuzu-honey aisukurin (sherbet) and vibrantly hued Inaka-zushi (countryside sushi prepared with yuzu juice and exquisitely preserved vegetables) while souvenir-worthy condiments include yuzu kosho (chilli paste) and ponzu. Travel FUKUOKA THE MULTICULTURALIST Not too big, not too small, Fukuoka is the most populous city on Kyushu Island and the gateway to southern Japan. Katsuo (bonito) sashimi is accompanied by raw garlic slices, wasabi and shiso and Katsuo-no-tataki, seared over open-flame, is seasoned with sundried seasalt and spritzed with yuzu.
