Abstrakt: The 1991 NIH guidelines did not consider this and, therefore, would deny surgery to Asians with metabolic syndrome whose BMI was less than 35 kg/m SP 2 sp . In 1991, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) decided to create guidelines for gastrointestinal surgery for weight loss [[1]]. The new ASMBS/IFSO guidelines allow metabolically challenged patients with BMIs as low as 30 kg/m SP 2 sp to undergo surgery when the best medical treatment fails. With that in mind, the leadership of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and The International Federation for Surgery for Obesity and Related Disorders (IFSO) decided that it was time to rewrite the guidelines based on the science found in the current published literature and that state of bariatric surgery in 2022.
