Abstrakt: This article reports that the fertile Colchagua Valley, located about 100 kilometers south of Santiago, is Chile's leading fine-wine producer and the first to establish a wine route— Ruta del Vino. Grape varieties include sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, merlot, shiraz (syrah), carmenère and cabernet sauvignon. Several estates can be visited by arrangement through the Ruta del Vino office in Santa Cruz. Among them are Casa Lapostolle, Vina Bisquertt and Montes. The flagship wine of Casa Lapostolle is Clos Apalta, a blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and carmenère.
