The motto of the S.P.E.S. publishing house, founded by Paola Barocchi in 1974, summarizes the fulcrum of the Florentine scholar's methodology with unprecedented effectiveness. Through the deepening of two cornerstones of Barocchi studies - Vasari and Baldinucci - this paper aims to underline how much the scholar's innovative critical approach has revolutionized the study of art literature and how the same still conditions contemporary studies. The first case study focuses on early contributions concerning Vasari's paintings. The aim of this focus is to emphasise how the unprecedent attention to the aretine's painting, judged to be devoid of any quality called into question the way of studying the Lives. In the second case study, the excellent focus on the historiographical nodes of Baldinucci's Notizie nevertheless overshadowed the substantial section dedicated to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, despite the interest demonstrated by the Germanic area since the end of the 19th century.
