Beer competitions are much debated. Are the competitions important for the success (more sales, new markets) of the beers winning medals? Do the medal criteria and the evaluations by the judges reflect consumer preferences? Are the competitions compromised or rigged, meaning that the organizers and not the judges pick the winners? These are all relevant and important questions that cannot be answered objectively, so the debate will probably never stop. And as brewing related topics that will always be debated are 'gefundenes fressen' for a magazine like the SBR, we take this opportunity to deliver some background for these discussions. The article below is based on both press releases from the European Beers Star organizers, the Association Private Brauereien Bayern, a couple of articles by Ina Verstl in Brauwelt Intl.'s on-line newsletters, supplemented by your editor, and it has been split into two parts, of which this is the second and last.
