Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a disease of unknown etiology characterized by gas-filled cysts within the bowel wall. The spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders associated with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is expanded by this report of a patient with refractory sprue who developed pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis and spontaneous pneumoperitoneum. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms and the importance of the clinical diagnosis are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
