Abstrakt: ' And my first thought was how could these horses possibly still have worms to treat?" Byrd didn't have to wonder for long. "I decided I'd check and see if the horses in my practice actually needed more deworming." By identifying each horse's parasite burden via fecal egg counts, treatments can be tailored to protect their health while still maintaining a genetically diverse parasite population on the farm. THE PARASITE CONTROL ARSENAL There are three major classes of deworming chemicals (anthelmintics) used in horses: AVERMECTINS and MILBEMYCINS (referred to collectively as macro-cyclic lactones) are still largely ef ective against a wide range of parasites. When I started testing horses in my practice, I discovered that most of these horses didn't have any significant evidence of these parasites at all, even weeks after a treatment.
