This paper studies the effect of the pore space heterogeneity on the size of a representative elementary volume for two single-phase flow characteristics — absolute permeability coefficient and tortuosity. To identify the minimum size of the representative elementary volume, the statistical approach is applied. Digital images of porous media are generated by the Monte-Carlo movement algorithm, which allows to control pore space heterogeneity. The results of this paper have been obtained using the numerical modeling based on the lattice Boltzmann equations. The results showed that the pore space heterogeneity tends to increase in the coefficient of variation for both absolute permeability and tortuosity, which leads to an increase in the minimum size of representative elementary volume. It has been found that the coefficients of variation calculated for tortuosity are significantly smaller than for absolute permeability. An increase in porosity leads to the decrease in the coefficient of variation and the minimum size of the representative elementary volume, accordingly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
