The syndrome of bile reflux gastritis has been described and our observations in 42 patients with this condition reported. It occurs in both nonoperated patients as well as after gastric surgery. The most prominent symptom is that of persistent epigastric pain which is usually associated with vomiting, anorexia and loss of weight. The diagnosis is established by the finding of gastritis on gastroscopic examination and the demonstration of bile reflux at gastroscopy or during gastric analysis with confirmation by gastric biopsy and ancillary findings noted on upper gastrointestinal x-rays. Cholestyramine has been found to be useful in treating patients with mild or moderate bile reflux gastritis. Patients with more severe bile reflux gastritis have been successfully treated with a Roux-en-Y type of operation to prevent bile reflux. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
