Abstrakt: The article deals with the reasons and historical roots of the celebration of dates directly related to people of labor - “Labor Days” and “World Day for Safety and Health at Work”. The emphasis is made on the fact that the establishment of these traditions is based on important socio-economic and socio-cultural changes inherent in different eras. For the end of the nineteenth century it was the desire of workers to win at least minimal conditions of social protection and improvement of working conditions, for the end of the twentieth century it was the awareness of all stakeholders of the need for joint efforts to improve occupational safety and health. We also traced more than a century-long history of “labour days”, which were characterized by both positive features in the form of maintaining solidarity of workers around the world and attempts of the authorities to use this holiday for their own purposes (primarily, in the form of the Soviet “May Day”). According to our estimation, even taking into account the somewhat different purpose of these two celebrations, at least at the level of moral and ethical dominants, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work has an undisputed priority.
