Abstrakt: The paper aims to analyse Edward Pon;bowicz's and Stanislaw Kasprzysiak's Polish translations of Giacomo Leopardi's Dialogue between a Sprite and a Gnome by demonstrating how an unfortunate choice made by both translators, who render the original "folletto" (sprite) as "kobold", influences deeper contents given by the author to the text. A detailed comparison of the two translations with the original text is accompanied by several studies that enhance the importance of the opposition of natural elements air - earth for the Operetta's interpretation as it corresponds to the opposition of the Dialogue protagonists, the sprite (which is detached from earth and therefore expresses anti-anthropocentric ideas) and the gnome (which is attached to earthly life and to human beings, expressing therefore anthropocentric point of view). In both translations, the opposition is being lost as the kobo ld is linked to the earth element, similarly to the gnome. Furthermore, in both Polish translations many other problems emerge as well as divergences from the original version. Some similarities concerning for example identical terminological choices, reveal the relations between both translations, ending with a recognition of a typical conjunctive error in the final lines of the Dialogue.
