Bhutan - like so many other countries in the world - is not immune to the scourge of domestic violence (DV). But Bhutan's legal and philosophical landscape is, in many ways, unique. Largely isolated from the rest of the world until the mid-20th century, Bhutan's justice landscape today includes strong formal and informal (traditional) elements. The authors of this paper ask what role traditional dispute resolution procedures should play in efforts to combat DV. They argue that traditional dispute resolution processes have an often-overlooked problem-solving role to play. Drawing on their efforts to design and implement just such a hybridised response protocol to DV in communities across Bhutan, the authors propose a re-evaluation of what they describe as the gradually hardening global consensus against the involvement of traditional dispute resolution processes in efforts to prevent and respond to DV, even in strongly pluralistic societies like Bhutan.
