BACKGROUND: Mentorship is an important part of OBGYN training. Mentorship programs have historically paired faculty mentors with resident mentees from the same institution. We developed a community-based mentorship program that paired private-practice physicians with PGY-1 residents enrolled at a university-based OBGYN program. The goal of this study is to evaluate the subjective experience of participants from the inaugural cohort. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study (mentors and mentees). Volunteer community mentors were identified among local OBGYN private-practice groups. Mentors were paired randomly with PGY-1's. At the conclusion of the first year, participants completed a survey containing Likert-scale, multiple-choice, and open-ended questions. Survey results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Surveys were completed by mentors (N=5) and mentees (N=4). Most mentor-mentee pairs (N=4) met or talked/texted at least 5 times. Sixty percent of mentors (N=3) were "Very Satisfied" or "Extremely Satisfied" with their experience and 80% (N=4) responded that they are "Very Likely" or "Extremely Likely" to participate with future PGY-1 cohorts. Seventy-five percent (N=3) were "Extremely Satisfied" or "Very Satisfied" with their experience and 75% (N=3) responded that they are "Extremely Likely" or "Very Likely" to recommend future interns participate in the program. CONCLUSION: Private-practice mentors and university-based resident mentees had an overall positive experience participating in the novel program. OBGYN programs looking to establish or increase mentorship opportunities for their residents can use our model to implement a community-based mentorship program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
