This article focuses on matters related to the excretion of vasopressin by normal and dehydrated sheep. In 1961 Kinne scientists infused vasopressin (ADH) into sheep and observed an unexpected increase in water, sodium and potassium excretion. There has since been some controversy over whether endogenous vasopressin plays its conventional water-saving role or whether its actions are anomalous in this species. The diuretic activity in sheep of infused ADH has been confirmed. On the other hand there is convincing evidence that ADH has essentially the same function in sheep as in other mammals, that is, it facilitates the elaboration of a hypertonic urine and has no special effect on electrolyte excretion. |
