Johannes Micraelius was a seventeenth-century German rhetorician and theologian. Among his publications, the Progymnasmata Aphthoniana in usum scholarum (1656) was a relevant work in which Micraelius adopts a Reformist thought along the lines of Burchard Harbart (1546-1611). In this paper, we show that religious topics often appear directly in Micraelius' text, yet indirect references are also present as in the case of the Fabula exercise. Here, the author explains that Prometheus - the personification of arrogance who sowed discord in the world - can be compared to the Pope, whose arrogance led the Church to a breaking point and triggered discord among Christians. That is, Micraelius' Progymnasmata are an example of how ideology and prescriptive rhetoric merge together in literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
