Abstrakt: While performing, the main feedback the musicians get is the (subjective!) quality of the sound they produce. One can only speculate as to why a first attempt is successful, and subsequent attempts sometimes are not. Built-in sensors and thorough data analysis should provide musicians with more objective information about their practice for faster progress. In this paper, we describe a novel technical solution where load cells, pressure sensors, a microphone, and a microcontroller are integrated into a brass mouthpiece cup. The recorded data can be wirelessly transferred to a smartphone via Bluetooth or to a server via Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), for live evaluation purposes. The Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) additive manufacturing technology was used to manufacture the customized mouthpiece cups. Such a tool also offers excellent prospects for applications in the field of distance learning and for the analysis of acoustic phenomena that take place at the interface between the musician's lips and the instrument.
