Shows the dipolar aprotic solvent dimethyl sulphoxide, although generally used in biology to preserve cells, to be capable of producing morphological changes in hepatocytes of the rat. Similarity of features to those caused by other hepatoxins; Damage due to dimethyl sulphoxide which was not prevented by compounds stabilizing the cell membrane; Probability that the substance exerts its effect by alteration of the selective permeability of the cell membrane. |
