Chemical conversion treatment based on a titanium/zirconium composite bath was simultaneously carried out on 6061 and 7075 aluminum alloys as well as zinc-coated steel. The effects of process parameters i.e. pH, temperature, and reaction time on corrosion resistance of the conversion coatings on the three metals when the concentrations of H2TiF6 and H2ZrF6 were constant were studied by copper sulfate dropping corrosion test and electrochemical corrosion tests. The surface morphology and element distribution of the conversion coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energydispersive spectroscopy. The results showed that conversion coatings with good corrosion resistance and uniform surface morphology could be formed on the surfaces of 6 and 7 series aluminum alloys as well as zinc-coated steel at the same time under the following conditions: H2TiF6 2.2 mL/L, H2ZrF6 1 mL/L, pH 3.9, temperature 35, and time 120 s.
