Abstrakt: This article reports that David McNeill, professor emeritus of psychology and linguistics at the University of Chicago, has been honored with a Festschrift conference on June 8, 2003. His retirement follows a remarkable career of some 40 years, built of highly original contributions to many areas of psycholinguistic research. In recent years, McNeill has been best known for his study of the role of gesture in human language. The presenters included some who have known McNeill personally for decades. Janet Bavelas of the University of Victoria, Canada presented work on the ways in which the presence and influence of another person, a factor frequently ignored in models of language production, impacts language use. cognitive impact on learning,problem-solving,and memory. Charles Goodwin of the University of California at Los Angeles spoke about the use of gestures linked to objects in the environment, with specific reference to the training of apprentice archaeologists. Michael Silverstein of the University of Chicago presented work on the cognitive interpenetration of formal grammatical categorial surface forms and categories of semantic and pragmatic processing. The diversity of academic disciplines among the guests well represented the vision of the organizers.
