This article discusses the facilitators and barriers to leadership for equity and inclusion in Nepal. Participants in the study were a group (n = 21) of education leaders engaged in an Australia Awards South and West Asia (AASWA) short course on inclusive education, delivered by an Australian university. The short course was designed to build on the existing leadership capacity of the group members which would lead to the implementation of renewed perspectives and practices in inclusive education on their return to Nepal. This qualitative study explores factors that impacted on participants' leadership on their return to Nepal. Data collected before, during, and after the AASWA program revealed that while participation in the program led participants into new and elevated roles as advocates for equity and inclusion in Nepal, systemic barriers impacted on broad areas of socio-cultural beliefs and shared understandings of equity and inclusive education as well as a systemic lack of resources and infrastructure that had a negative impact on furthering equity and inclusive education in their education settings. Our article concludes with recommendations for planners of similar programs in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
