In airborne radars, mitigation of ground clutter returns from main-lobe and side-lobe of antenna is a challenging task. In range-Doppler image, ground clutter spreads along range as well as Doppler dimensions and is detected by constant false alarm rate processing. In this paper, a novel method based on grayscale mathematical morphology is proposed for clutter mitigation in close combat mode by processing range-Doppler images. The morphological closing operation is performed on range-Doppler image so that the clutter region becomes contiguous and forms a homogeneous background region. When constant false alarm rate processing is applied on the processed range-Doppler image, the clutter region gets undetected while the targets embedded in the clutter are detected. Both flat and non-flat structuring elements are used in the closing operation. The signal-to-noise ratio loss is less in non-flat structuring element compared to processing with a flat structuring element. The proposed algorithm requires no prior information or training data and is adaptive to the clutter. The proposed method has shown good performance in the reduction of false alarms in clutter region when applied on data with different clutter scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
