An impertinent diagnosis is one which is accurate and valid, but is not the most important nor fundamental diagnosis in the case at hand. The obvious diagnosis may be impertinent, and divert clinical attention from more important, life-threatening disease. The ensuing delay in diagnosis and treatment of the unrecognized disease may have serious consequences for the patient. The concept emphasizes the potential dangers of applying incorrect therapeutic measures which may be correctly based, but upon an impertinent diagnosis. It is recommended that possible diagnoses be ruled out by objective evidence lather than by probability statistics. This might best be accomplished by deindividualizing the diagnostic work-up to assure that the clinical evaluation is carried to completion, whatever diagnoses are established along the way.
