An essay is presented which explores the revaluation of the 15th century Italian sculpture style Quattrocento by Italian art historian Leopoldo Cicognara. Topics discussed include the significance of this revaluation to the history of European sculpture, the reliance of Cicognara on literature which he collected for his art library, and the impact of the research conducted by Cicognara on the works of Venetian sculptor Antonio Canova. |
