This section presents a reprint of the June 1939 letter from art historian Otto Pächt to colleague Meyer Schapiro, which appeared in the 2019 book "Ideas Crossing the Atlantic: Theories, Normative Conceptions and Cultural Images," edited by Waldemar Zacharasiewicz and Christoph Irmscher. Topics addressed include the concerns raised by Schapiro regarding Pächt's theory of national constants and the art historical considerations that influence the criteria for classification. |
