Abstrakt: The review analyzes data on the connections and functions of the structures of the central nervous system that form the central autonomic network (CAN), namely the prefrontal cortex, the extended amygdala, the hypothalamus, the central gray matter, the nucleus of the solitary tract, and the ventrolateral region of the medulla oblongata. We consider main properties of the CAN, such as morphological and neurochemical complexity, the presence of several outputs, and state-dependence. It is concluded that the main, but not the only function of the CAN is to maintain homeostasis in the current and predicted behavioral context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
