In this research, the effect of doping alumina with 1 wt% of manganese oxide (Mn), 1 wt% titania (Ti) and the combine doping (Ti+Mn) were studied. The sintering behaviour of these samples were compared to the undoped alumina. All samples were sintered in air atmosphere between 1250 to 1600°C. Sintered samples were characterized to determine the phases present, bulk density, elastic modulus and Vickers' hardness. The results showed that the co-doping of (Ti+Mn) was most beneficial in adding the sintering of alumina at low temperatures when compared to the singular doping and the undoped ceramic. A relative density as high as 98%, a high Young's modulus of 370 GPa and Vickers hardness of 14.8 GPa could be obtained for (Ti+Mn)-doped alumina sintered at 1250-1300°C. A higher temperature regime would be required for the undoped sample to achieved similar outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
