As illustrated by the provided examples, the NMR can efficiently and effectively distinguish positional/structural isomers, homologs, and other related compounds. The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a critical part of the US communications and logistics infrastructure, delivering over 140 billion mail pieces in 2019, including over 6 billion packages. SP [ sp [1] SP ] sp Although the vast majority of these mail pieces are legitimate transactions connecting friends and family members to each other and helping businesses communicate with and deliver to their customers, the mail is occasionally used for illegal purposes. Numerous synthetic cathinones with varied substituents have been encountered in drug evidence, and closely related compounds can be challenging to distinguish without NMR data. SP [ sp [[4], [6]] SP ] sp The USPIS-NFL did not have a laboratory standard for either of these substituted cathinones (Figure 1). The 400-MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer has proven to be an invaluable analytical instrument for the identification of potentially illicit substances removed from the mail stream.
