After World War II, there werehundreds of prosecutions in various countries of Europefor war crimes and related offenses, and manycountries have brought war crimes charges within thedomestic regime since. The state of peace among men living side by side isnot a natural state; the natural state is one of war. Those trials, together, provided asolid groundwork for future war crimes prosecutions. It would be several decades before the internationalcommunity had the will to create new tribunals withjurisdiction over war crimes. The ambit of the ICC is broader than war crimesand other offenses during armed conflict but continuesto follow the time-honored structures for crimescommitted during armed conflict: war crimes, crimesagainst humanity, genocide, and, most recently, therevival of the crime of aggression, sometimes calledthe crime against peace.
