The diversification and repurposing of molecular functions are not restricted to axon guidance molecules functioning in synapse formation. This special issue on neurobiology has an emphasis on molecular mechanisms of connectivity from axon-dendrite patterning to synapse form and function. The ligands and cell surface receptors guiding axon outgrowth and synapse formation are largely conserved across species emphasizing the functional significance of these pathways.
