Abstrakt: Mathematics word problems are considered a complex problem because they involve many different aspects of competence that must be mastered to solve it. Comprehension skills are often an obstacle for students in solving mathematics word problems. The aim of this study is to find ways to help students enhance their ability to answer word problems. Literature studies are conducted by searching for various references to papers or research journals focusing on the process of solving word problems. Followed by looking for references on the topic of cognition and metacognition, which are closely related to the problem solving process. As a result, according to several sources, students' ability to locate keywords, structure problems, and determine the situation and goals that need to be achieved in the questions influences their ability to understand the word problems. This kind of knowledge involves cognition and metacognition, which allows students to increase knowledge, ask themselves questions, and manage and monitor how they work to solve word problems. Activities in the classroom contribute to the development of cognitive metacognitive capacities. Finally, this study describes examples of instructional methods that encourage students to think more thoroughly about mathematics word problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
