The present work deals with an analysis of the failure of a suspension leaf spring used in a public transport utility vehicle. Actual failure data of leaf spring components are analyzed. The effect of component failure on the failure phenomenon of leaf spring is presented. Failure sources of leaf spring and its associated components are identified. Actual ground data from the state transport workshop has been used to identify the failure causes. The consequences of the failure of leaf and attachments are analyzed in the present work. Scanning electron microscopy of the failed leaf has been carried out at various amplification levels. The present work discusses failure modes of master leaf, eye, brass bush center bolt, and U-bolts. Failure of these components is attributed to fatigue, overloading, improper driving (braking & turning), and cyclic loads. The nature of lube and its effect on the life of leaf spring has been discussed. Methods and recommendations to improve leaf spring life and avoid failure are specified in the present work.
