Abstrakt: This research was conducted with a light microscopy to examine the comparative aspects of morphological development of the tongue in the pre-pubertal and adult stages of Awassi sheep (Ovis ovis). The tongue displayed three parts in both ages; root, body and apex. The ram's tongue exhibited more height, width and thickness than lamb's tongue across all the pervious regions. As for papillae, there are no significant differences in total number of the gustatory papillae (fungiform and circumvallate papillae), with a significant increase in age-related taste buds/papillae. On the other hand, the mucosal tongue epithelium in both lamb and ram was keratinized stratified squamous epithelial tissue and it had papillary structures developed to serve as gustatory and mechanical functions.
