Abstrakt: Background: Beta and beta/HbE thalassemia are hereditary disorders mostly requiring chronic transfusion. Chronic transfusion causes iron overload indicated by an increase in serum ferritin levels. Analyzing correlation between serum ferritin levels with lipid profile in transfusion-dependent beta and beta/HbE thalassemia patients in Hematology-Medical Oncology Clinic. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational analytic study, involving twenty eight patients fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria as the subjects of the study. Data analysis was performed using Pearson's correlation test and was considered significant if p <0.05. Results: From total 28 subjects, there where 27 (96.43%) subjects with low levels of total cholesterol, 27 (96.43%) subjects with low levels of HDL, 27 (96.43%) subjects with low level of LDL, and 6 (21.43%) subjects with high levels of triglyceride. All of subjects had ferritin >1000 ng/mL (100%), and 24 (85.71%) subjects had ferritin =2500 ng/mL. The average of serum ferritin was 5684.46±3104.81 ng/mL, and average of lipid profile was as follows: total cholesterol 80.28±20.76 mg/dL, triglycerida 118.71±46.71 mg/dL, HDL 23.71±8.78 mg/dL and LDL 48.75±16.85 mg/dL. There was no significant correlation found between serum ferritin levels and lipid profile in patients with transfusion-dependent beta and beta/HbE thalassemia (total cholesterol (r=0.060 and p=0.763), trygliserida (r=0.276 and p=0.155), HDL (r=-0,234 and p=0,231) and LDL (r=0.141 and p=0.474)). Conclusion: Lower levels of lipid profiles were found in patients with transfusion-dependent beta and beta/HbE thalassemia. However, there was no significant correlation between serum ferritin levels and lipid profile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
