Metal Matrix Composites are gaining much demand in industrial applications like Automotive and Aerospace owing to their excellent mechanical properties. Moreover, the limitations in fabrication of MMCs are major challenges faced by industries. The joining method like friction stir welding (FSW) happens to be the most suitable approach for joining the most of metal matrix composites (MMCs).In this review paper, the problems faced during conventional welding of MMCs were addressed and discussed how these problems can be overcome with FSW. Influence of FSW process variables like tool rotation, speed of turning, axial force and tool tilt on properties of weld joint conveyed in detail. The assessment is given on weldability of MMCs. After welding, changes occurred in the joint in macro and micro structural level was discussed. Different tool pin geometries, its influence on weld joint, along with wear rate and measures to be taken for reducing tool wear were reviewed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
