In this growth of the world's population, high volumes of wastewater discharge into the water bodies, posing a threat to the environment and causing various health concerns. Conventional wastewater treatment needs upgrade to cater for the high demand for clean effluent and concerns with environmental pollution. Microalgae-based wastewater treatment has shown many advantages that can meet the new demand for improved wastewater treatment. Scenedesmus obliquus is well-known freshwater microalgae and a rapidly growing organism. It has been identified to tolerate a wide range of environmental conditions such as light intensity, photoperiod, pH, and temperature, making it the most potent and most promising choice for removing contaminants in the wastewater. This review will provide a critical account of Scenedesmus obliquus as a parameter in wastewater treatment for enhancing the reduction of pollutants such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater from different sources. However, considering the issues related to the complexity of wastewater characteristics such as wastewaters from different sources have significant pollutants contents, create challenges that can limit the efficiency of the Scenedesmus obliquus in removing the pollutants. Thus, the main aim of this review is to emphasize the knowledge of the factor affecting the Scenedesmus obliquus effectiveness to remove pollutants in wastewater treatment. Consequently, it offers possible improvements and modifications for a better biological wastewater treatment system. It is intended to serve as a source of information for a researcher to generate significant interest in using microalgae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
