Abstrakt: Red betel (Piper crocatum Hort) and green betel (Piper betle Linn) are kind of plant that contain bioactive compounds with antimicrobial characteristic such as flavonoid, alkaloid, polyphenol, tannin and essential oil. Bioactive compounds of betel plant extract contain many substances that still fused with another compound. To know what substances more effective as antimicrobial agent are, the fractionation has to be conducted. This study aimed to assess characteristics and antimicrobial activity of bioactive component fraction in Red betel and Green betel extract. The result of this study shows that red betel extract has lower solubility (93.56%) than green betel in ethanol solution but has higher solubility (94.71%) and pH value (5.90) than green betel in aquadest; effect of interaction between eluent hexane : ethyl acetate (3:7) with 2nd fraction component show the highest average clear zone value of Escherichia coli (6.87 mm).
