Abstrakt: The article suggests that the usual emendation of Beowulf 62, one of the poem's well-known cruces, is metrically and syntactically impossible. The article examines the original basis for the emendation hyrde ic pæt Yrse wæs Onelan cwen. As Onela is the only known Swedish king whose name fits the manuscript reading, the assumption that his name is to be inserted here seems quite reasonable. It is not, however, entirely outside the realm of possibility that Beowulf 62 originally named an unknown Swedish king.
