The article attempts to refresh the reading of Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski’s novel Mateusz Bigda. Śmieja shows the roots of the novel’s idea in categories derived from Hegel’s philosophy of history, with a particular emphasis on the master-slave dialectic, which in the novel determines not only the meaning of social transformations but also the psychological dimension of the relationship between protagonists (Mateusz Bigda and Władysław Deptuła). This relationship develops in the novel’s sequel – the partially preserved Jedwabny węzeł (Silk Knot) – in which happens another shift of the dialectic toward erotic relations: between Mateusz Bigda and Ms. Kostryniowa.
