The article cites a study related to experimental thyroiditis in the rhesus monkey. Experimental thyroiditis has been produced in the rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta by repeated injections of a crude extract of monkey thyroid gland. The disease differed from that developed by rabbits, guinea-pigs and other experimental animals in several respects. The degree of thyroidal inflammation was generally greater, although considerable variation was encountered from animal to animal both in the extent and the sequence of pathological alterations. Like the rabbit and the guinea-pig, immunized monkeys manifested circulating autoantibodies to homologous thyroglobulin demonstrable by tanned cell haemagglutination or precipitation-in-gel. |
