While many readers consider Raja Rao's Kanthapura (1938) as a pro-Gandhian novel, reading between the lines reveals Rao's treatment of the ideological and practical failures of the Gandhian movement. In the novel, Rao presented Nehruvian socialism as a ray of hope for those disappointed with the Gandhian struggle. At the same time, he did not deliberate on socialism and its path in detail in the novel at the crucial time when the ultimate impact of Gandhian nationalism and Nehruvian socialism was to be decided in the future. The ending in the novel is inconclusive; the novelist deftly chose the middle way during the socio-political upheaval in India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
