Lean Production (LP) system is a trendy management system among manufacturing organizations, especially largescale manufacturers. Now a day, more than 50 lean tools and techniques that can be applied by industries. This paper presents a preliminary study about the effects of lean tools and techniques implementation in Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs), large and multinational industries. A questionnaire was used as an instrument in this study to explore the current LP tools and techniques applied by SMEs, large and multinational industries, to identify the areas of lean implementation and to study the effects caused to them due to the implementation of the LP system. The survey was conducted on a total of 22 respondents from randomly selected SMEs, large and multinational organizations manufacturing various types of products. The respondents were top management personnel who were directly involved in LP practices or who understood them well. There was a total of 24 lean tools and techniques found to be the most popular among Malaysian organizations, applied in 10 areas of implementation. The results from this survey revealed that, the use of lean tools and techniques could increase the product/service quality (average mean score=4.73) and productivity (average mean score=4.64) of the participating companies. The finding of this study can be used as a guideline or reference for other organizations, particularly SMEs, which plan to implement the LP system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
