Fatty acids are the main components of the lipid and play as part of the major chemical compounds found in sea cucumbers. Many studies have shown the fatty acids have key roles in the metabolic activities of organisms and contribute to many therapeutic effects. Despite these relative advantages, most of the studies encountered on sea cucumber species in the literature have mainly focused on the general content or some other specific compounds of interest to researchers including fatty acids. Fatty acid as part of lipid in sea cucumber presented higher values of saturated fatty acids (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) but some factors affect fatty acid composition in sea cucumber. Therefore, this review aims to evaluate and summarize the profile of fatty acid content in sea cucumbers and compare its important nutritional content with other sea cucumber species. This information can be useful as the development of fatty acid from sea cucumber as source of drug and functional food. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
