The text represents a hitherto unknown secondary use of the inventory of the Prague Habsburg collection from 1621. In the second half of the 17th century, the Benedictine monk and scholar Gabriel Bucelin (1599– 1681) used it for his “encyclopaedic” text Pictorum Europae praecipuorum nomina. The names listed thus became the basis for his survey of the most famous European painters. As a reward for his genealogical studies, Bucelin also acquired a hitherto unknown painting of the Virgin Mary from Prague Castle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
