Abstrakt: The subject of the study in the article is the analysis of the features of the social environment of closed atomic cities considering the modern studies of the city and the urban environment. When considering this issue, the emphasis is placed not only on identifying environmental characteristics, but also on determining the context of the emergence and development of closed administrative territorial units as a subtype of Russian industrial monocities. The main advantage of sociology as a scientific branch of knowledge is seen in the special application of study methods that make it possible to analyze social relations at the micro and macro levels in the context of the development of the urban environment. The methodological framework is based on application of an interdisciplinary approach in the study of the urban environment. This approach allows us to go beyond one approach, to take into account the peculiarities of understanding this problem in the context of various scientific disciplines (sociology of the city, sociology of management, urban studies, and etc.). The main results of the study are as follows: 1) urban themes in general and analysis of the urban environment of the CATU as a subtype of an industrial city are relevant objects for sociological study; 2) the sociological approach allows for the analysis of urban sections considering various factors; 3) an atomic CATU bears the features of both a small and an industrial mono-city with its own features determined by the design and regime status; 4) the problematics of atomic CATUs consists in the curtailment of the Soviet atomic project, respectively, there is a need to reformat the CATUs; 5) the prospects for development of the CATUs are seen in the "reboot" of the industrial potential in the direction of NPC technologies, as well as development of areas of science-intensive industries.
