The article discusses changes in cell cultures produced by toxic lupin extracts. Toxic lupin extracts affected the nuclear apparatus of cells in lamb kidney tissue cultures, leading to arrest at metaphase and the production of multinucleated cells. Some cells in arrested metaphase adopt bizarre shapes. Lupinosis is a mycotoxicosis of a wide variety of animal species caused by the ingestion of lupin material, usually in the form of roughage. In the laboratory attempts to purify and identify the toxin(s) causing lupinosis, using mice as test animals, are in progress. As the mouse test requires a relatively large quantity of material and is normally assessed 6 to 10 days after injection, a more economical and rapid bio-assay was sought. |
