In the present study we used herbarium specimens of Quercus pubescens Willd. and Quercus virgiliana Ten. preserved in the “Alexandru Beldie” Herbarium – BUCF in order to create an updated database regarding the intraspecific taxonomic variability and highlight their presence in our country (in a certain place and time), information very useful for mapping their distribution. The analysed material was composed of 332 vouchers (252 of downy oak and 80 of Italian oak) preserved in very good conditions. For both species, almost all varieties and forms of leaves described in the Romanian literature have been identified. The analysis of the intraspecific variability showed that in the case of Q. pubescens predominates the var. lanuginosa f. pubescens, respectively var. tenorei f. typica in the case of Q. virgiliana. It has also been found that some forests situated in the south of the country have a higher intraspecific taxonomic variability. Moreover, was also noticed that Q. virgiliana does not have a separate area from that of the species of Q. pubescens, but it is much more restricted compared to the latter one. Given that the data provided by herbarium materials are most often verifiable, persistent and durable, these can be used as starting points for various studies and research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
