Background: Cardio-oncology is a multi-disciplinary field that provides comprehensive cardiovascular (CV) care to patients with cancer. Methods: A retrospective observational study of the patients served at the UConn Health cardio-oncology clinic between January 2014 to December 2018 was performed. Baseline demographic data, prevalence of pre-existing heart disease and CV risk factors, and reason for referral were identified. Results: The most common reasons for referral to the cardio-oncology clinic were the development of new cardiac symptoms or asymptomatic cardiotoxicity while undergoing systemic anti-neoplastic therapy. Of all patients referred, 38.4% (N = 146; 68.5% female; mean age of 63) had at least one pre-existing CV disease. In addition, this cohort had a high prevalence of CV risk factors: hypertension (58.2%), hyperlipidemia (44.5%), obesity (42.5%), active or former smoking (39.7%), and diabetes (24.7%). Sixty-three percent of patients had two or more CV risk factors. Conclusion: Increased recognition and management of CV risk factors in all stages of cancer care represent an important function of the cardio-oncology clinic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
