In the current work, a novel combination of discharge plasma and industrial wastes has been proposed to explore the possibility of treating the oxides of nitrogen (NOX) in diesel exhaust through plasma-activation of abundant and freely available industrial wastes. Five industrial wastes have been selected for testing as potential catalysts, namely fly ash, foundry sand, bagasse, mulberry residue, and oyster shells. The diesel exhaust was treated using plasma catalysis, by allowing it to flow through a dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor packed with industrial waste pellets, at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. An increase in NOX removal during plasma catalysis, in comparison to plasma-only treatment, was observed through experiments conducted using the pellets. Maximum removal of NOX (70%) was obtained during plasma catalysis using oyster shell pellets. The results have been discussed in detail along with the possible reaction pathways and explanations for the NOX removal during plasma catalysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
