Young Sulawesi babirusa (Babyrousa celebensis) were recorded on 80 occasions diving into a temporary pool at Babirusa Park (Bali, Indonesia) over a period of five years from 2005. Based on video footage, this article describes aspects of this observed pool diving behaviour. Pool diving by young babirusa appeared to be a playful behaviour elicited by providing animals with a specially designed pool in tropical climatic conditions. These observations support the provision of relatively large water and mud areas to captive babirusa for animal welfare purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
