Femoral head and neck excision, excisional arthroplasty of the hip, or femoral head and neck ostectomy have all been used to describe the surgical removal of the femoral head and neck that causes a pseudoarthrosis to form between the cut surface and the acetabulum (FHO). In dogs with severe hip dysplasia who are not candidates for complete hip replacement, this surgery is frequently utilized as a last resort or salvage procedure.FHO has traditionally been the preferred treatment for Legg-Perthes disease in smaller breeds. Small dogs and cats with femoral head and neck, or acetabular fractures, or chronic coxofemoral luxations may experience the same problem. The procedure's outcome depends on the size of the dog. This procedure is quite successful in small dogs but in large breed the prognosis is low. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
